Chapter Eight

Samantha felt Oliver place his hand on her back as they meandered through the staff cleaning up the arena. They’d stayed and chatted until all the other invited guests left.

Tonight had been an absolute dream. Everything Lewis and the other board members described made her want to come back for the grand opening even more. She had to, no matter when it happened.

Of course, sharing the night with Oliver made it all the better. He rubbed his fingertips across her back, sending a surge of warmth across her bare skin. She leaned into him as they walked back through the empty building.

She slowed her steps when they came to the front room with the glass walls. “I can imagine all the beautiful animals swimming in here already.”

Oliver smiled. “I bet. This place will be something once they finish it.”

“Yeah.” She sighed wistfully. Why couldn’t this place be closer to home? She’d apply to work here in a heartbeat.

Oliver stopped walking and faced her. He cupped her cheeks with his hands and drew her in for a kiss. As their lips parted, hers curved into a smile.

“What was that for?”

He shrugged, then dropped his hands from her face. “I wanted to kiss you here. To help me remember this night.”

“I don’t think I’ll have any trouble remembering it.” Samantha twisted her lips and focused on the glass walls as they went out the front entrance. Her gut tightened when the door locked behind them. Part of her wanted to stay in there forever. In that majestic place. With Oliver.

They passed the mostly empty parking lot and crossed the pavement toward the construction zone of what Lewis confirmed would be another parking lot. Oliver opened her door and waited as she climbed inside, then he circled around to his door.

She stared at him as she reached for her seat belt. “One request.”

“Anything for you.” He hopped in the Jeep and batted his eyes.

She laughed. “Since there’s no more surprises, could we take the main road this time?”

“Who said there’s no more surprises?” He lifted his eyebrows, then lowered them and smiled. “Yes, I’ll drive like someone in his right mind this time.”

She buckled her seat belt and relaxed her shoulders as he pulled onto the main road. She slid the hair tie from around her wrist and secured her hair into a makeshift bun. Not that her hair could get any more tangled than it already was, but at least this way it wouldn’t whip her face.

The ride back went much smoother than the ride there, restoring her faith in Oliver’s driving skills. Before today, she’d only witnessed his boat-driving skills. And there weren’t many obstacles in the ocean.

He pulled up to the entrance of Shady Palms and parked, then he shut off the Jeep and checked his phone. “Would you like to sit on the beach for a bit?”

“Sure.” She unbuckled and bounced out of the Jeep before Oliver could come around to open her door. He met her at the front of the vehicle and held out his hand.
